Connect Matomo to ChatGPT: Your First Useful Answer

Connect Matomo to ChatGPT with Savigny’s hosted MCP server, select your website and generate a verifiable weekly traffic briefing.

You can connect Matomo to ChatGPT through an MCP server, then ask questions about your traffic in a conversation. A useful first result is a short weekly briefing with the reporting dates, visits, leading channels and top pages. You still need to check the figures against Matomo before sharing the briefing.

This guide uses Savigny, a hosted, read-only Matomo connector. You do not need to install a plugin on your Matomo instance.

What you need

  • An existing Matomo installation reachable publicly over HTTPS.
  • A Matomo API token belonging to a user with view access to the intended websites.
  • A Savigny account and a ChatGPT workspace that permits custom MCP connections.

ChatGPT availability and administration rules change. Check OpenAI’s current custom MCP instructions before starting. If your workspace does not offer the connection option, ask its administrator or use the Savigny dashboard.

1. Connect Matomo to Savigny

Open Matomo setup. Enter your installation’s base URL, add the token and select the websites to share. Enter the token in setup, not in the chat. Savigny stores it encrypted on the server.

The base URL might be https://analytics.example.com or https://example.com/matomo. A VPN-only instance, localhost address or private network endpoint will not work with Savigny.

2. Add the remote MCP connection

In ChatGPT’s app or plugin settings, create a custom MCP connection if your workspace permits it. Use the name Savigny and this server URL:

https://mcp.savigny.io/mcp

Complete the OAuth sign-in using the same Savigny account and authorize read access. Enable the connection in your conversation. Exact menu labels depend on your workspace; the setup guide links to the provider instructions.

3. Start by selecting the website

Use Savigny to list my available Matomo websites, including IDs and
timezones. Ask me which website to analyse before retrieving reports.

Choosing the website first prevents a plausible answer about the wrong property. Once you have selected it, ask:

For the selected website, summarise the last complete calendar week.
State its exact dates and timezone. Retrieve visits, traffic sources
and the ten leading pages. Give me three observations backed by the
returned figures and two questions worth investigating. Do not invent
conversions, missing metrics or explanations for changes.

4. Verify the answer

Check the same website, dates and timezone in Matomo. Visits mean sessions; they are not interchangeable with unique visitors. A top-ten page list is a partial ranking, not the complete site. If you ask for a comparison, use equal, completed periods and show both absolute and percentage changes.

AI can suggest reasons to investigate, but a traffic report alone does not prove why visitors behaved differently.

What Savigny can answer today

Its seven tools cover websites, visits, pages, traffic sources, referring websites, countries and a calendar-month comparison. Goals, conversions, events, arbitrary API methods and custom segments are outside the current tool set. Use Matomo directly when those are essential. Savigny does not change tracking or configuration.

If no tools appear, check that the connection is enabled, the OAuth account matches your saved connection and the website is selected in setup. Start a new conversation after reconnecting.

Next, use the monthly report template or compare native and AI reporting workflows.
