Give Claude Your Matomo Data: A Practical Connection Guide
Connect Claude to Matomo through Savigny using a remote MCP connector and OAuth. Build a traffic comparison with dates, figures and reporting limits.
Connecting Matomo to Claude lets you ask for a traffic briefing without exporting tables into a chat. This walkthrough uses Savigny’s hosted MCP endpoint and OAuth. It is intended for an existing Matomo website, not for installing tracking.
Prepare the Matomo connection
Create a Savigny account and open Matomo setup. Supply your installation’s public HTTPS base URL and a token with view access. Select the websites you intend to analyse and save the connection.
Your Matomo token belongs in this setup screen. Claude authenticates to Savigny through OAuth; you do not need to paste the Matomo token into a prompt or a local configuration file.
Savigny currently supports one Matomo connection per user, with website selection inside that connection. It does not connect to VPN-only or private-network installations.
Add Savigny as a custom connector
In Claude, open the connector settings and add a custom remote connector. Use Savigny as the name and enter:
https://mcp.savigny.io/mcp
Follow the OAuth flow and sign in with the Savigny account holding your connection. Enable the connector in the conversation. Workspace administrators may control whether members can add connectors.
Use Claude’s current remote connector guide if its settings differ from this description. A remote connector does not require the older local Node.js bridge approach.
Ask a question Claude can verify
First ask Claude to list the available websites and their timezones. Select one explicitly. Then try:
Use Savigny for the selected website. Compare visits for the last
complete calendar week and the week before. Show exact dates,
timezone, both totals, the absolute change and the percentage change.
Then retrieve the leading traffic sources for both weeks. Separate
what the reports establish from possible explanations.
If the previous value is zero, a percentage increase is undefined. Ask for the absolute change instead of a misleading percentage. If a tool returns no data, Claude should explain that rather than inventing a total.
Follow up with a content question
Ask for the top pages in the same period. A useful follow-up is: “Which of these pages should I investigate first, and what additional evidence would help?” A ranking tells you where activity is concentrated; it does not prove content quality or business value.
Ask Claude to preserve the reporting dates in its answer. Matomo uses the website’s timezone, which may differ from your computer’s timezone. Avoid comparing this week so far with a full previous week.
Know the reporting boundaries
Savigny exposes seven read-only tools for websites and traffic reports. Its current tools do not fetch events, goals, conversion reports, custom segments or arbitrary API methods. Claude cannot retrieve a report that the connector does not expose, and connecting it does not grant permission to change Matomo settings.
For campaign revenue or funnel analysis, use the appropriate Matomo reports or a connector whose documented tools cover them. Our Openmost comparison explains that scope difference.
Troubleshooting
If the connector is present but the website is absent, check its selection in Savigny setup and the underlying Matomo user’s access. If authentication fails, reconnect with the correct account. If Matomo is unreachable, check the public HTTPS address and token validity.
Once the first comparison works, use the monthly reporting template to turn the conversation into a repeatable briefing.
