Matomo vs Plausible: Which Fits Your Reporting Workflow?

Compare Matomo and Plausible through five real reporting questions, operating effort and AI integration. A practical guide with links to both vendors.

Choose Matomo or Plausible by the questions your team needs to answer and the work it can maintain. Both are established alternatives to Google Analytics, but a useful comparison goes beyond a feature count.

This is a decision guide based on their public documentation, not a performance benchmark or a same-website experiment. Savigny connects to Matomo, so we have a commercial interest in that ecosystem. Plausible may still fit your needs better.

If you want a quick traffic overview

Plausible emphasises a compact dashboard and a simpler reporting experience. If your recurring questions concern traffic, sources, pages and conversions, try its demo against those exact questions. A smaller interface can be an advantage when the person reading the report is not an analyst.

Check Plausible’s own comparison and its current product documentation. Verify the features and limits for the edition you would actually use; a hosted plan and a self-hosted edition can have different capabilities.

If you need a more configurable analytics setup

Matomo offers a broad reporting and extension ecosystem. That can matter when you need detailed configurations, specialised reports or integration with existing Matomo workflows. It also means someone must own the configuration and understand what each report means.

Use Matomo’s comparison as one vendor’s account, then verify important features directly. Do not assume every listed capability is included in every Matomo setup: premium plugins and hosting plans can change the practical cost.

Compare five real questions

Try the same tasks in each candidate before choosing:

  1. How many visits did we receive in the last completed week, and from which sources?
  2. Which pages matter to our current content or acquisition goal?
  3. Can we measure the outcome we actually care about, such as a signup?
  4. Can the person responsible produce a useful recurring report?
  5. Can our team maintain the tracking and integrations over the next year?

Record whether the answer is available, how you verified it and what setup was necessary. This is a more useful internal test than choosing the longest feature list.

Account for the whole operating cost

Compare the relevant subscriptions or hosting resources, optional features, integrations and staff time. Self-hosting still involves updates, backups and monitoring. Hosted software still needs someone to maintain the tracking plan and reporting definitions.

Avoid comparing a minimal self-hosted installation with a fully configured hosted plan as if they were equivalent products. Check current vendor pricing when making the purchase decision; this article does not fix a price that may change.

Where AI changes the decision

An AI interface can make existing Matomo reports easier to explore. Savigny lets a compatible assistant retrieve traffic reports and draft explanations. It does not make missing tracking data appear or replace the analytics platform underneath.

Its current MCP tools do not cover goals, conversions, events or custom segments. Do not choose Matomo on the assumption that Savigny provides those through chat today. See the tool reference.

Our recommendation

Shortlist Plausible when a compact reporting workflow answers your needs. Shortlist Matomo when its configuration and reporting ecosystem solves a concrete requirement your team is prepared to operate. If you already use Matomo and your main complaint is the work of interpreting traffic reports, try a connected AI workflow before undertaking a migration.
